LIMBER IVÁN HERRERA DELGADO
PERU, 16
Project: Educación: La Clave del Cambio (Education: The Key to Change)
Basic Human Needs: Education, Environment
Growing up in Peru, Limber witnessed gender discrimination on a daily basis. He experienced discrimination firsthand in athletics and his mom had been forbidden to pursue an education by her family. Limber realized Peru’s society was full of misconceptions about gender roles and women’s rights. At age 14, he founded Educación: La Clave del Cambio to break down the barriers of gender equality. Translated to English, “Education: The Key to Change,” works to change Peru’s future society by providing education and awareness about gender equality to students. Limber leads events, forums and campaigns in high schools to promote dialogue and discuss gender equality. He has spoken to 1,000+ students in nearly every district of Amazonas in Peru. In partnership with schools and the regional government, Limber also organizes model United Nations events for students to collaborate and create peaceful solutions to societal issues. In December 2019, Educación: La Clave del Cambio led the first student march to ever take place in his community of Chachapoyas to fight for equal human rights. The success of the march earned them government funding to mobilize similar demonstrations in additional communities. In 2019, Limber was invited to meet with Amnesty International, which led him to establish Amnesty International’s first youth network in the Amazonas. In 2020, Limber plans to begin teaching English to students in Peru and educate them on their opportunities to participate in exchange programs. He believes that education will power a generation that moves society forward.
