BRAZIL & ISRAEL, 19

Project: Historiar-te and Beyond The Wall
Cofounders of Beyond The Wall: Caroline Olival, Carol Araújo, Luísa Gouveia, Mariana Nunes and Eduarda Raposo
Basic Human Needs: Education

Juliana grew up surrounded by violence in Rio de Janeiro. Over time, she understood Brazil’s violence stemmed from generations of intolerance and educational inequity. In August 2018 Juliana founded Beyond the Wall to bring students together, learn from experiences outside of the classroom, discuss inequity in their community, and seek to create solutions. Beyond the Wall leads bimonthly events and campaigns to raise funds and awareness for a variety of important causes, always placing the stories of those impacted at the center of every event. Juliana also cofounded Historiar-te to democratize access to education by providing tools and resources online. Their online platform delivers lessons in accessible, engaging videos that are adapted to a learning style for those with dyslexia, ADHD and little formal education. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Historiar-te’s videos were broadcast by Educational Media State Centers to facilitate students learning remotely. In 2021 Juliana plans to produce videos that cover every topic within Brazil’s standard curriculum, with the addition of youth protagonism, multiculturalism and alternative education. Juliana hopes both of her organizations create a generation of Latin Americans who are empathetic, inclusive, and aware of the issues and inequity in their communities.
