Project: Hakeela (formerly Wegodigiteens)
Victor had always been a tech enthusiast, but like many of his peers, he didn’t know where to begin on the journey to pursue a career in technology. In his community in Calabar, opportunities in technology were scarce, while unemployment was prevalent. Victor was determined to change the narrative for young people in Nigeria and across the continent who wanted to pursue their aspirations. In May 2019, Victor formed Wegodigiteens (now known as Hakeela) to build a generation of young African techpreneurs, leaders and innovators in the digital world. Hakeela is an EdTech organization that leverages AI to bridge learning and communication gaps for marginalized and specially assisted young Africans. The organization leads virtual and in-person workshops and summits, career sessions curated by professionals in the tech space, and international tours visiting schools across West Africa. Unique from other programs, Hakeela creates curricula to connect specific communities, such as a workshop designed for young people living with sickle cell. Victor was especially proud of their Girl Can Code program, which encouraged many girls from Calabar to pursue roles in programming. Hakeela has educated 20,000+ young people in Nigeria, Tanzania, Ghana and Cameroon in technology skills, career opportunities, and how technology intersects with various careers and social issues. With existing chapters in three Nigerian states, Victor hopes to establish chapters and build physical Hakeela centers across West Africa. He believes digital skills should be available for every young person in Africa, especially in under-resourced communities. If given the opportunity, Victor is confident youth will unlock Africa’s digital economy to create a prosperous future.
