Nancy Shute, Editor in Chief of Science News Media Group, leads a 101-year-old independent nonprofit news organization is globally recognized for its authoritative, accessible coverage of news is science, technology and medicine for the public.
Science News has approximately 127,000 print subscribers and attracts 23.2 million unique visitors to ScienceNews.org annually. Science News has a significant reach on social media, with 4.4 million followers on Twitter and 2.7 million followers on Facebook. Through our Science News Learning program, our reporting reaches more than 17,300 teachers and approximately 5.8 million students at 5,615 schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories. Many of our articles are adapted for Science News Explores, with a print magazine and website to make science accessible for ages 9 and up. The Science News Explores website attracts 11.7 million unique visitors annually and the print magazine, which launched in May 2022, has 30 achieved percent subscriber growth in the first three issues.
Shute is a past president of the National Association of Science Writers and has spoken widely on challenges in science journalism and public communication of science. Before joining Science News, Shute was a reporter and editor for NPR’s science desk, and director of science and technology coverage for US News & World Report. An award-winning journalist, she has contributed to The New York Times, Washington Post, Smithsonian and Outside, among other publications.
She founded the first bilingual newspaper in Kamchatka, Russia, while teaching journalism there as a Fulbright Scholar. She is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and Yale Law School.
